Nothing can measure the full experience of a day on any given set of slopes, but data does allow for a peek at what fundamentally makes a ski hill great. In analyzing statistics for hundreds of U.S. and Canadian ski resorts, we considered only those that offer at least 100 skiable acres, receive an average of at least 50 inches of snowfall a season and have at least one operational chairlift. Then, we factored in eight different metrics, including the abundance of natural snowfall, the quality of a resort’s terrain and the liveliness of the après-ski scene. Here are the top 10 resorts →

WITH SNOW already falling in some parts of the country and many resorts set to open in the coming weeks, many skiers and snowboarders—whether powder hounds or après-ski aficionados—are weighing which resorts to visit this winter, not to mention which multi-mountain pass to buy. Nothing can measure the full experience of a day on any given set of slopes—the vertiginous views from a swaying chairlift, the euphoria of epic powder or the tranquility of a post-ski soak. But data does allow for a peek at what fundamentally makes a ski hill great.

Nashville, Tenn., was the best labor market last year among regions with at least a million people. Music City, U.S.A., and America’s recreational-vehicle capital are the country’s hottest job markets, according to The Wall Street Journal’s annual rankings of nearly 400 metro areas. The Nashville, Tenn., metro area—an entertainment hub and state capital that is home to Vanderbilt University—ranked as the best labor market in 2022, among regions with at least one million people. Nashville has benefited from Americans’ desire to move to cities in the South and the resurgence in tourism in recent years.
Where to live is a very personal decision. But with some degree of remote work seemingly here to stay, The Wall Street Journal set out to put data and analysis behind how to identify great places to live if you have the option to work from home. We started out by commissioning a custom survey, with Ipsos conducting a nationwide poll of 1,050 adults in the U.S. in August 2022. This poll allowed us to identify the top 10 factors people said they cared most about in a remote-work location and to weight them accordingly in our ranking. Our unique ranking highlights places you may not have thought to put at the top of your list, but that fit the criteria people say they care about the most when it comes to a great place to work remotely.
When people think of great places to work remotely, what usually comes to mind is some resort-worthy locale like a beach in Hawaii or North Carolina, or a cabin in the Rockies. But what about Springfield, Mo.
